I sometimes wish I was a cartoonist. Not that I have ideas for a cartoon, but it seems like a really great medium: so flexible and accessible.
I've been reading American Splendor lately, the stories published by Harvey Pekar in the 70s and 80s. The remind me of Bukowski, but with less booze and more anger: common, true and beautiful.
But I can't draw. (Neither could Pekar, by the way, he badgered friends to illustrate his work).
Instead, though, I've been trying to illustrate with photographs. Choosing images that match tone and story, trying to integrate them with lines of text that might come together. ... Last night I finished up a small, 12-page booklet that is pretty abstract. You can find it on Etsy here.
